BRICE GRIZONNET
En Remont 2024
Beaujolais, France
From old vines of Gamay high in the hills of Fleurie, which are up to a hundred years old and planted over a mix of granite and quartz. The grapes fermented as whole bunches for a month, before being pressed to barriques under the farmhouse for a year of élevage. Light, airy and featherweight on the palate, its red fruit shimmers with minerals and offers a long, salty finish. This is simply as good as it gets in Beaujolais.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Julie Balagny left us in the spring of 2023, leaving a hole in our hearts and some big boots to fill. Thankfully, things are now in the hands of her longtime right-hand-man Brice Grizonnet, better known as Dr Briçou.
At the beginning of 2025 we travelled to Beaujolais to visit Brice at Julie’s place in Romanèche-Thorins. It was the first time we had returned since her passing, and walking into that courtyard to see the usual cast of locals enjoying a post-pruning lunch in the early spring sunshine, with her dog Popette en place as always under the farmhouse table, was a surreal experience.
Brice began working alongside Julie in 2019, and having spent four years together, his sensibilities in both vineyard and cellar are very much aligned. He has secured a long lease on En Remont, a three-hectare parcel in the highest hills of Fleurie surrounded by woodlands and home to vines up to a hundred years old, planted in Guyot on steep slopes over a complex mix of granite, basalt and quartz.
He will continue to work organically and by hand and, with the family’s blessing, make the wines at Julie’s home in Romanèche just as she taught him, practising a classic Beaujolais carbonic maceration, pressing the grapes slowly with their ancient press and ageing the wines in the old cellar beneath the farmhouse.
Easygoing, humble and kind, Brice doesn’t seem at all overawed by the task at hand, and having been left speechless tasting his sublime 2024s from barrel, we feel it is safe to say that En Remont is in good hands.
