IL TERRAZZO IL TERRAZZO

A Selection of Wines for Summertime

IL TERRAZZO features wines which encapsulate everything we love about summer drinking. Delicate and perfumed, they offer plenty of complexity and finesse and are perfect alongside the beautiful ingredients that fill the markets at this time of year.

LE COSTE
Pizzicante Rosato 2021
Lazio, Italy

This gorgeous sparkling rosato is made from Aleatico, destemmed and fermented on the skins for just a few hours before being pressed off to vats and finally into bottle to finish fermentation. After just over two and a half years on the lees, the wine was disgorged, producing a gorgeous, pale sparkling rosato with gentle bubbles that carry notes of blood orange, sea salt and rose.

Aleatico

ALEX DELLA VECCHIA
Pedecastello Bianco 2022
Veneto, Italy

This is made up of equal parts of local variety Bianchetta and a mix of around a dozen hybrids which Alex planted together some six hundred metres above sea level. The grapes spent three days on the skins, before being pressed off to tank to rest until the following spring, making for a wine of great freshness that reminds us of the alpine flowers and pure spring water of its mountain home.

CANTINA GIARDINO
T’ara rà 2021
Campania, Italy

Greco from Santa Paolina and one of the highest vineyards in Campania at 650 metres above sea level. The grapes were fermented on their skins for four days, before a year of ageing in old barrels of chestnut. From soils of tufo, this is compact and powerful, pairing firm tannins with pronounced notes of petroleum, smoke, mandarin and spice. Perhaps the best version of this wine we have tried.

Greco

GAZZETTA
Rosa Trilli 2022
Lazio, Italy

Sangiovese from Orvieto, which spent three days on skins before pressing to vats until the following spring. A gleaming shade of ruby, this draws you in with joyful notes of wild strawberry and herbs. Featherweight on the palate, it possesses a pleasant blood orange bitterness that offers refreshment in spades.

Sangiovese

AJOLA
Rosso 2022
Umbria, Italy

Sangiovese from thirty year old vines planted over clay in Orvieto, destemmed and macerated on the skins for a fortnight, before a year of ageing in vats. A luminous shade of red in the glass, it is light, bright and perfumed with varietal notes of red cherry, herbs, balsamic and brine. A perfect example of the kind of rustic, soulful wines we love to drink at the trattorie that line Umbria’s hills.

Sangiovese

LA PETITE SOEUR
Gamins 2022
Loire, France

Gamay from a forty five year old vineyard planted over schist. The grapes were fermented as whole bunches for two weeks, before being pressed off for a short rest in cuve. This warmer year has produced a deeper, darker expression of the grape, which is all black plum, minerals and peppery spice. A classic bistro wine, so suited to the Loire’s robust cuisine.
