Vi de Vila 2025

A blend of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo from vines young and old, spread out across small parcels in Vilalba dels Arcs. The grapes were pressed directly to old casks until the following spring, with a warmer year having produced a rich, perfumed wine that combines stone fruits, almonds and chalk to beautiful effect. This is very much suited to the joys of the Catalan table, from the mountains to the sea, and everything in between.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Òscar Navas Capilla is one of the most talented of a new generation of growers changing the face of Spanish wine.

Òscar grew up in Barcelona, but with ancestral ties to the Terra Alta, he developed an interest in agriculture at a young age and began his journey in wine working alongside a young Eloi Cedó Perelló on Mallorca, who would quickly become both a mentor and friend.

Òscar’s first vintage was 2017 and today he farms seven hectares of old vines spread across several villages in the Terra Alta, planted up to six hundred metres above sea level. The soils are deep, silty and of calcareous origin, and though they differ markedly in composition from one site to the next, they are predominantly what the locals call panal. The soils and elevation lend his wines depth, complexity and a luminous character of real intrigue.

In his small bodega in the village of Vilalba dels Arcs, he focusses on the ways of old, harvesting healthy grapes as ripe as possible, working gently, and ageing the wines in old casks for as long as he deems necessary.

Believing that good wine shouldn’t cost the earth, each year Òscar produces a white and red vi de taula – pure, rustic wines made for the table and everyday drinking.

Alongside and perhaps in contrast to these, he releases an occasional series of breathtaking single vineyard wines. Aged in old casks until ready and bottled in tiny quantities, they include Brisat dels Arcs, Comasorts, Vinya d’en Miquel, and the mythical Finca Rosita – a shimmering, layered white that is amongst the greatest we’ve tasted from the Mediterranean.

Òscar is something of an old soul, a laidback guy with a sensibility that belies his youth, who seems just as proud of a simple table wine as he does the greatest white you’ve never tried.
